Eight bridges connect the San Francisco Bay, so it is an apt name for a gallery platform that brings the Bay Area art world together.

Our mission is to maintain a vibrant gallery scene, despite restrictions on travel, celebrations and other larger gatherings. We want to support our artists by informing and entertaining curators, collectors and critics with potent online exhibitions of their work.

On the first Thursday of every month, we will launch 8 shows of artists relevant to the Bay Area. They may be working in this place, long considered an epicenter of change, or deeply engaged in the conversations the Bay Area holds dear, whether it’s related to technology, the environment, social justice or sexual identity, to name a few. In addition, each month will highlight the crucial work of a Bay Area non-profit arts organization.

John Chiara takes an experimental approach to photography by building his own cameras, some of which are large enough for him to walk inside. Quintara at 14th (2016) is a large photogravure of sunlight streaming through foliage. The warm, dreamy atmosphere creates an illusion of deep space and physical texture. Through a hazy lens, Chiara’s print recalls a distant time and place.

Mary Heilmann paints with a loose, gestural style in bright, distinctive colors. She references a variety of themes such as surf culture, television shows, and pop music, and often infuses personal memories into her work. In Lineup 2 (2017), turquoise blue brushstrokes are stacked on top of one another, suggesting the rhythmic procession of waves rolling in the ocean.

Julie Mehretu’s massive paintings investigate culture, social injustice, politics, and natural disasters to provide a contemporary perspective through abstract mark-making. Her large-scale etching Unclosed (2007) is built up from complex layers of whirling marks and subtly-colored lines. Like a cosmic map, her immersive print has dense areas of collected marks as well as untouched, quiet spaces.

Chris Ofili’s work blends figuration and abstraction with a vibrant palette and collaged elements. Ofili draws inspiration from mythology, religion, and the island of Trinidad, where he has lived since 2005. His print Last Night. New Day (2008) refers to his memory of kayaking through one of the island's caves and emerging into a misty stream of sunlight. The title and imagery of his print create a hopeful visualization for the new year.
